HIV/AIDS

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically, the infection-fighting CD4 cells (CD4 T lymphocyte) of the immune system. If HIV is untreated, it can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

There is currently no effective HIV cure or AID vaccine, but drugs are available for treatment and prevention. Because of the intense impact of the disease, it has been the subject of intensive scientific research and pharmaceutical development for decades.
