After being named president-elect of the AMA in June 2022, Ehrenfeld will take the reins as president this June, becoming the first openly gay person to hold the position. A combat veteran who served in Afghanistan, he is professor of anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and director of the school’s $560 million Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment fund, which promotes community health. In his upcoming role, Ehrenfeld plans to focus on AMA’s Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians, which includes promoting telehealth and helping doctors suffering pandemic burnout.
